There's loads of those types of movies OP

You can start with Ju-On: The Grudge, Ringu, Onibaba, Audition, Cold Fish, Gozu, Noriko's Dinner Table, House and Kwaidan. There's just so many to mention honestly

And it's not even the storywriting because the emerican The Ring was "scarier" than Ringu – it's like maybe the cinematography and direction that just loses me on nippon films…like "hey let's linger for 10 seconds on the water the wet ghostgrill tracked into the house on her feet oooooooooh". I don't know something about these films just has me feeling like they're trying to nudge me in the ribs "scary eh!??" i just am thinking "no…".
i watched HOUSE a long ass time ago I don't remember it being "scary" it was just kinda "arty".
